Where did the data come from?
The United States conducted a Census of Manufactures from 1850–1880, sending enumerators to collect data from establishments producing at least $500 worth of goods.
Why are there multiple 1880 datasets?
From 1850–1870, all establishments received a similar questionnaire, though questions varied by decade. In 1880, the Census of Manufactures used three schedules: a general schedule for most firms, a “special agent” schedule for key industries with expert enumerators, and a “special” schedule for certain important industries using regular Marshals with tailored questions.
